Our Summer Excursions I

Since Sandra's job is proving to be very demanding this summer, we're taking multiple long weekend exploration trips, rather than blocks of time off. (Although we are hoping to get to Chicago in early August for a decent amount of time.) We're basically doing a taste-and-see tour of New Mexico, Arizona and southern Colorado -- whatever we can drive to and around in 3 - 4 days -- to admire and enjoy the beauty of God's varied creation.

So, having purchased an SUV last fall which is long enough to allow Keith to sleep in the back (yes, the vehicle research involved folding the backs of potential buys down flat so Keith could lie in them to see if he fit with the doors closed), our camping excursions began over Memorial Day weekend. We drove to the Grand Canyon and spent the night about 5 miles south of the western entrance off of a National Forest road. Sandra had never been to the GC and Keith hadn't been since childhood. We were enthralled by God's amazing handiwork, and encouraged to come back prepared to do more hiking down below the rim.

We then drove down to Sedona, one of our favorite areas in AZ, and enjoyed the beautiful road down Oak Creek Canyon on the way. In Sedona we walked through the cute Tlaquepaque shopping area and found out where we could park to sleep. It turned out to be off another Forest Road west of Sedona, but we had the place completely to ourselves. Well, once the jeep tours stopped zooming by. We just love the vivid contrasts of the red rocks and green vegetation of the area.

Just look at the incredible view from our deluxe accomodations.

Upon awakening, and finding a place to get some coffee, we decided to head down to Phoenix/Scottsdale to find a pool and soak up some sunshine. We enjoyed our day lounging in Scottsdale. Keith went for a run, and Sandra finished a very fun book. We ate at one of our favorite restaurants and had some pleasant conversation with couples seated on either side of us at the bar. Since we weren't very tired at that point, we began driving back to Albuquerque. We got as far as Payson and spent the night in the Walmart parking lot there.

Monday we were home in plenty of time to clean up, get the SUV washed and vacuumed, and spend the evening relaxing before the week began.
